Commonly used preservatives that prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast. Parabens are found in many shampoo, face cleanser, body wash, body lotion, and cosmetic products. However, studies have shown these commonly used ingredients may link to cancer, act as hormone disruptors, and emit reproductive toxins. Paraben’s similar estrogen chemical structure mimic this female hormone which can confuse the body’s natural responses. In some cases, parabens have been link to spur the growth of breast cancer cells.

Methylisothiazolinone/Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MI/MCI)

MI/MIC is a preservative found in personal care products, sun cares, cosmetics, and baby wipes to fabric conditioners and household cleaners. Studies have shown that this preservative may cause a type of eczema that acts as an allergic reaction with symptoms of redness, dryness, blisters, swelling, and even a burning or stinging sensation. This allergy may arise after applying and using products containing MI/MCI for year and years. More female then males are likely to develop this allergic reaction because of the increase contact with more cosmetics and personal care products contain MI/MCI. The body areas that tend to be affected are face, hands, and genitals (baby wipes).

Sulfates are detergents and foaming agent frequently found in many personal care products such as shampoos, toothpastes, shaving creams, body washes and facial cleansers. Two widely used and known sulfates are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS and SLES). Over the year, researchers have discovered that sulfates may cause irritation on the skin and scalp.

Silicones are non-biodegradable unsustainable chemicals commonly found in skin and hair products. There are many different types of silicones and it can be hard to tell if your shampoo or conditioner contains them if you don’t know what you are looking for, but look out for words ending in ‘cone’ on the ingredient list, e.g. dimethicone. Silicones are used to give your hair added shine and smoothness. However because silicones are water insoluble, it is form a layer around the hair shaft, smothering the hair and preventing moisture from penetrating, which can lead to dryness and brittleness. Silicones create a temporary illusion of healthy hair, but as they continue to build up layer by layer, your hair gets weighed down and can appear greasy and dull

DEAs/MEAs/TEAs (Ethanolamine Compounds)

DEA and DEA-related ingredients function as emulsifiers or foaming agents in cosmetics, or to adjust a product's pH (acidity). Researches have shown that ethanolamine compounds like DEA, MEA, and TEA found in shampoo and body washes are suspected carcinogens and organ system toxicity of the liver, kidney, and brain.

Colorant is something added to something else to cause a change in color. Studies have shown that most colors and dyes are made with synthetic chemical. One color could possibly be made up to 50 or more chemicals. Generally used Food, Drug & Cosmetic (FD&C) and Drug and Cosmetics (D&C) approved colorants are coal-tar derivate, which are continuously tested on animals. Colorants are commonly used in soaps, lotions, shave gels, toothpastes, shampoos, styling creams, face creams, toners, cleansers, bath gels, and more. Many are made of coal tar, and may contain heavy metal salts like arsenic and lead that can deposit toxins onto the skin. These toxins increase your risk of skin sensitivity and irritation, and are known for blocking pores and increasing the risk of acne breakouts. If they’re included in products you leave on your skin, they may be absorbed into your body where they can cause additional damage.

The word "fragrance" or "parfum" on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients used as fragrance dispersants such as diethyl phthalate. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) lists 3,059 materials that are reported as being used in fragrance compounds. Of these 3,059 ingredients, some have evidence linking them to health effects including cancer, reproductive toxicity, allergies and sensitivities.

Phthalates (DBP, DEHP, DEP and others)

Phthalates are a group of chemicals (including DEHP, DINP, DBP, DEP, and more) used as softeners, or plasticizers in hundreds of products to include personal care products, such as nail polish, hair sprays, aftershave lotions, soaps, shampoos, perfumes and other fragrance preparations. Studies have shown that The National Toxicology Program and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report that DEHP is reasonably to be anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity of animal studies. DBP has been shown to cause proliferation of breast tumor cells and to make anti-estrogen treatments, such as tamoxifen, less effective against tumors. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health demonstrates that DEHP can cause liver tumors in animals. Pregnant women or young children, whom the research has indicated are the most vulnerable to the effects of phthalates.

Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs)

GMOs are moving beyond the dinner table and entering into the personal care and cosmetic world. With the skin can absorb up to 60% of the ingredients put on its surface, GMOs are concerns for personal health and the environment. World Health Organization (WHO) defines GMOs as organisms like plant, animals, or microorganisms, who genetic DNA material has been altered or change in a unnaturally occurs process through genetic engineering, biotechnology, or recombinant DNA technology by mating, inserting, or through natural recombination of a DNA genetic fragment of one organism into another. According to the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), several animal studies have indicated serious health risks associated with eating GM foods, including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen, and digestive system. In addition, studies have linked GM foods with asthma, allergies, inflammation, and intestinal damage. The concerns of adding GMOs to personal care products are allergic reaction, genetic transfer, and outcrossing, the indirect effect on future crop health and production.
